When you remember the good old days of the Commodore 64, you know you have been playing video games too long. If you don’t intend to stop your habit and want to relive the glory years, we have a new emulator for you. Simon Kagstrom has ported Christian Bauer’s Frodo emulator to the Wii. The author notes that the application has only been tested at 480i on a PAL TV, so NTSC users (and 50Hz users) might have display problems. Nonetheless, we have ourselves a first revision of a working Commodore 64 emulator!

Put .t64 or .d64 files in /apps/frodo/images on your SD card. The in-game menu allows you to insert disks/tapes, load them and configure the display, joystick ports etc. Saves will be stored on the SD card and the preferences are stored persistently. Wiimote 1 is by default the joystick in port 1 and wiimote 2 the joystick in port 2, but you can swap this.

In-game controls

Wiimote Horizontal Action
Wiimote D-Pad Joystick direction
Wiimote 2 Button Fire button
Wiimote 1 Button Wiimote + Button Wiimote - Button Wiimote A Button Wiimote B Button Configurable for keypresses in the menu
Wiimote HOME Button Enter Frodo menu

Menu controls

Wiimote Horizontal Action
Wiimote D-Pad Move up/down/left/right in the menu
Wiimote + Button Wiimote - Button Move one page down/up in the menu
Wiimote 2 Button Wiimote A Button Select current entry
Wiimote 1 Button Exit from menu

Get your joysticks out!

Sweet, a c64 emulator for the Wii :)

One minor thing though, NTSC runs at 60hz and PAL can run at 50hz or 60 hz depending on the TV.

Colour can also be an issue if you use a composite video cable, for example NTSC on a PAL TV that cannot switch to NTSC wil result in a black and white image, and the same with PAL on an NTSC.

Sorry for that. Thanks for the correction. I’ll update the post, although the author of the application does say this has been untested on NTSC and 50 Hz TV’s ;)
