Back on another forum I am active in, we have a shoutbox, which is a little chat box on the forum index page. It would be nice for just asking quick questions, generally chatting and means you can socialise in the forum more. If anyone else thinks this is a good idea, would the admins/mods be able to implement this?

ive seen that before. ill have to check with our main admin to see if that works. its a good idea, whether its good to start it now yet is another question. We're still a growing community

Could be a good idea but from what I know of programing it could be a pain in the a** to implement.

well for those that dont care they dont have to use it. there are a good number of people who would probably use it.

from previous experiances on another forum im on, the shoutbox is only ever used by regular members and only as casual chat. Sometimes you also get people asking for help in there. Its a great way of asking small questions without opening a new thread, and we can direct people where to look in the forum rather thatn starting pointless threads. I have never seen anyone abuse the shoutbox. But then again, thats just my own experiance.

Label me as the nagging admin, but I kind of wouldn't like to see this on the site. This is the reason I gave to the other admins, but I don't think it would hurt sharing my thoughts:

I think we should hold off on it. We aren't very big right now, and this would only incur a lot more off-topic chat. Since everyone registered and not registered can see it, I don't think it's all too good of an idea right now.
Plus we would have to implement it into ALL themes in the forum or only people using a certain theme would see it.

I'm not saying it will never happen, but I think we can wait and see where we go with it.

Is there no why we can make it so only people registered and signed in can see it? This would be much better.

I'm not sure. It could be possible. It might also be possible for it only to be seen in the Chat forum. I'm not sure.

I'm not against trying it though, but if it IS abused, it will have been a lot of work for nothing. If we can't customize it as we would like, there would have to be pretty strict moderation rules on it.

I would watch it, and make sure people dont post links to iso's and so forth too.... that could be "nasty" for this forum (i dont see how, but i have read the rules lol)

They catch us distributing illegal material, sites gets instantly shut down, Greg gets fined. I don't think any of us want that to happen, so that's why I'm iffy about this. It could even be as bad as someone trying to copy a link into the chat box, but the last link on their clipboard was a new CD.
