I'm here from PSP-Hacks, and I know people prefer that I do a sufficient search on all the forums before asking my question, but I'm so unfamiliar with the Wii lingo that I don't think I'd recognize the answer. Also, forgive me if 'soft-mod' is not the correct term.
I've been thinking of buying a Wii, and it will be frequently played by young kids, so I'd rather them play 'backup' copies so the originals can be preserved.
So I have one simple question:
If I went out and bought a Wii (probably for Christmas), is there a way to modify it to play backup games without physically altering it? I'm not one for soldering stuff to the motherboard.
I look forward to your reply.

The simple answer is yes, but let me warn you, you might not experience 100% compatibility.
As of now, we have a working backup loader. However, it is not the perfect solution. We do not have online play working yet, and some games refuse to load. There is a list here of some of the results:

There are also some games where sound is glitchy, or the video will not render properly
My best advice is to see which games will work and which games will not. For the most part, most games will work fine.

Looking at that, it says I need to do some Twilight Princess Homebrew Enabler first.
Looking at the Twilight Princess Homebrew Enabler, it says it doesn't work on the latest firmware.
I won't be buying the Wii for a month or so... does this mean things likely won't work for me?

Hmm... If you buy a Wii in a month, it may or may not have the correct firmware. If that particular console has been sitting on store shelves (or in storerooms) from this date, then it will be on an appropriate firmware. If it has been shipped to the stores from this date on, it will host an incompatible firmware.
As I typed that, I'm thinking something: It's possible that stores have already begun to stockpile Wii's so that they have them in demand for the holiday season. It's very possible that your Wii could have a hackable firmware.
On the other hand, the way the Wii scene is moving, we might have a patch for the Zelda Exploit by the time you get your Wii! There are a lot of possibilities!
