[Tutorial] Guide to Changing your Wii's Region and System Menu

Guide to Changing your Wii's Region and System Menu
Prerequisites:

    * WiFi Internet Access on your Wii or a game disc with an update for the target (desired) region
    * Zelda: Twilight Princess or other means of running homebrew applications.

In this guide I'll be using my own Wii as an example and will be changing it from NTSC-J (Japan) to NTSC-U (North America).

   1. Install the Homebrew Channel. You can find instructions on how to do this and the files to do so here: Setting up your Wii for Homebrew - WiiBrew
You could also do this directly with the Twilight Hack.

2. Download Waninkoko's Wii Custom IOS 37 rev 03 or higher (wii.waninkoko.info). Create a folder called "apps" on your Homebrew Channel SD card and create another folder inside that and call it "cios". Copy the "cIOS37_rev3-Installer.dol" file into this "cios" folder (\apps\cios\) on your Homebrew Channel SD card. Rename the "cIOS37_rev3-Installer.dol" file to "boot.dol". Download the "IOS37-64-v2070.wad" file from somewhere. (Google.de for it). Put the "IOS37-64-v2070.wad" into the root (main folder) of the SD card.

3. Download Waninkoko's Wii Region Changer from his site (wii.waninkoko.info). Extract the Region changer's files. Create a folder in the apps folder on the Homebrew SD card called "regionchanger" and move the "Wii-Region-Changer_v1.dol" file that you extracted into that folder. Rename the "Wii-Region-Changer_v1.dol" file to "boot.dol".

4. Download Waninkoko's Wii Custom IOS Downgrader from his site (wii.waninkoko.info). Extract the Custom IOS downgrader's files. Create a folder in the apps folder on the Homebrew SD card called "cios_downgrader" and move the "cIOS_Downgrader_v1.1.dol" file that you extracted into that folder. Rename the "cIOS_Downgrader_v1.1.dol" file to "boot.dol".

5. If you have a modchip set its region to the target region (i.e. the region you want to change to) In my case this would mean setting it to NTSC-U (North America).

For WiiKey users this means downloading the WiiKey update 1.9s disc and WiiKey 1.9s config disc from wiikey.cn/resources for the target region. Again, in my case this would mean downloading the NTSC-U (North America) version of the update and config discs. Burn both discs using ImgBurn or Nero (etc.).

You're now prepared to start the main opeation.

1. If you havent already set the region for your modchip, do so NOW.
For WiiKey users this means running the update disc and completing the update. Ignore any warnings about using the correct region. From this point onwards you wont be able to read any game discs anymore until you're done with the region change operation. Dont run the config disc yet.

2. Start the Homebrew Channel. Find the Custom IOS 37 rev 03 installer item and run it. Complete the installation and it will reboot. You now have the Custom IOS required to do the operation.

3. Start the Homebrew Channel. Find the Region changer item and run it. Select your desired (target) region by using the left-right buttons on the D-pad. In my case this would mean hitting right till I see NTSC-U (North America). Push the A button. This completes almost immediately so dont be surprised. At this point your Wii's region is now changed. It will reboot. After reboot your warning screen should have changed and the system menu will show up fine. The settings menu will not work yet. This will be fixed in the next step.

4. Start the Homebrew Channel. At this point you need to have WiFi connectivity (through wireless router or Nintendo WiFi USB stick, etc). Find the Custom IOS Downgrader item and run it. You will get a list of the existing firmwares that you can install. You can scroll down to see the rest of the list by using the up-down buttons on the D-pad. Select the firmware you like and press A. In my example, since my Wii had firmware 3.1J before the change, I decided to keep it at 3.1 and so I selected 3.1U. Make sure you pick the firmware that corresponds with your new (target) region. 3.1U is for NTSC-U (North America), 3.1J is for NTSC-J (Japan), and 3.1E is for the PAL region. Once you press the A button it will install the necessary files (this could take a few minutes depending on your connection speed, but you will see the progress) and will the reboot.

Alternatively, if you dont have a WiFi connection, you can use an orignal game disc with an update on it for the target (new) region and let it do the update.

5. If your modchip has a configuration disc run it. You WONT be able to play any games or read any discs until you run the config disc and save the settings.

For WiiKey users this means running the config disc that you burned earlier and choosing configure and choosing the settings you like there

6. Go to the settings menu and select the Language of your preference. Make sure you do this step, otherwise you might have some leftover text using the old language. For example on Japanese Wii's if you dont go the Language menu and select English, you might have leftover Japanse writing in the Photo Channel, etc.

Congratulations, If you followed the steps correctly you should now have a Wii with the region of your liking. I know a lot of NTSC-J (Japan) Wii owners will be really happy, like I was.

Re: [Tutorial] Guide to Changing your Wii's Region and System Menu

Are you sure its ok to update to the firmware for the new region? Ive heard that some people changed their regions, then updated from a game and fully bricked their wii's

Re: [Tutorial] Guide to Changing your Wii's Region and System Menu

hey there, sorry im a newbie here. Well im getting myself an japanese Wii so i thought this might be useful for my modification.  Well after reading this i had some question that i need to confirm.... thanks alot

1. If i need Zelda Twilight Princess for the Twilight Hack, which version of Zelda do i need to purchased? (NTSC-U) or (NTSC-J) to start off the Twilight Hack?

2. Do u install the homebrew channel BEFORE the modded chip add on or AFTER? So you mean even 'virgin' Wii Japanese version still can install the homebrew channel?

3. So far which is the most reliable mod chip? Wiikey? Can i purchased it online and DIY?

4. So after the modification the the Japanese Wii will become US Wii? Can i play online? How bout the server? And can it play original and copy games as well? How bout Gamecube original and copy games? Will it work the same?

So far i think this will be sufficient. Until i get my jap Wii next week i think i'll proceed to the guide that you provide. Thanks a bunch

Re: [Tutorial] Guide to Changing your Wii's Region and System Menu

@ andrewcha: Welcome to the site, I hope you enjoy browsing our forums smile

1. You need Wii version of Zelda TP. NTSC-J for an unmodded console

2. You can install the Homebrew Channel at any time you want, before or after you install mod chip it's up to you.

3. I personally stick to D2Pro for compatibility but everyone has there own opinion.

4. After using the region changer your Wii will be what ever region you chose it to be.

Re: [Tutorial] Guide to Changing your Wii's Region and System Menu

Well thanks but i try to look around but is really confusing that why japanese original games are far more expensive than US version...?  Ever since i try on my own by hardmodding my psp battery and changing the CW as i like, now im not sure if i can hack the Wii sad
D2PRO.... oh yeah i left out 1 thing..... this region hack is compatible with which MOBO? 1st, 2nd or 3rd generation MOBO? Cos im not sure wat MOBO will i get on my jap Wii next week...
Huhuhu actually im planning to send it to those videogames shop to modify for me but.....you know.... the satisfaction and the knowledge that u gain if u DIY just like PSP....tongue

http://wiitracker.nintendo-scene.com/se … JF13174130
results are D2C likely no cut pin.
so my final question before i do some operation on her
can i use Zelda : Twilight Princess copy game (which just cost RM15 or USD5) in my place for the Twilight Hack?
recommendation for D2C is D2PRO with Wiiclip attached?
thanks alot

Re: [Tutorial] Guide to Changing your Wii's Region and System Menu

Yeah, your D2Pro thats installed is set to the region you were before you changed and now it's confused, try changing your region back to it's original one.

Its a D2Cpro not D2pro, so is that means that i got no chance of changing the system menu to english version? How if i update using WiiConnect24? Because now my wii cant read ANY disc = cant twilight the Wii....

Re: [Tutorial] Guide to Changing your Wii's Region and System Menu

The chip is a D2Pro, you could try updating via Wiiconnect. Do you not already have TP hack installed?

Re: [Tutorial] Guide to Changing your Wii's Region and System Menu

Please don't say "copied games I bought", it's illegal to buy pirated software.

OK this is what your going to do.....
1. Do a full system reset
2. After you have done that insert a retail version of a game from the region your console is from and play it for a few minutes.
3. After that eject disc and reset your wii and allow it to boot back up.
4. Try one of your backed up games again.
5. Let us all know the results...... big_smile

Re: [Tutorial] Guide to Changing your Wii's Region and System Menu

1. If your a modded Wii then your Wii is a multi-disc reader (US/JAP original/backup) disc will do so don't worry too much

2. If your using cios 37 rev 3 to change the region so why you wanna bother about it (i'd use cios 37 rev 2 installer, not sure what does rev 3 has improved)

Re: [Tutorial] Guide to Changing your Wii's Region and System Menu

if you update to Beta 9 make sure you convert your files to elf to dol as some homebrew apps dont work with HBC9.

I'm going to say this once....
Stop double posting and asking the same questions over and over, I've already deleted four of your posts thats not been needed plus people are starting to get really annoyed at you. Other users are giving you clear, straight answers and you keep asking the same questions.
