Wasabi Mod Chip Review

http://techsick.com/images/wasabi-chip.jpg

I've installed a good amount of Wiikey's for friends of mine. But with the new drives not being able to chip with a Wiikey, i thought i tried a change and mod my buddy's D2C drive with the Wasabi. I was quite disappointed at first because after the wires were installed, the drive would not read backups at all. And my soldering skills is dead on perfect. So i went to the Wasabi website ( http://www.wasabi.net.cn/ ), and looked through the FAQs to see if i could find anything. I remember reading on Maxconsole regarding a 47uF Capacitor being needed to i ran to my neared Electronics store and grabbed it. This is what is stated on the Wasabi Website

Q: I've already checked the installation, shortened the power wires or changed the wires if needed, but the LED still stays red, what's the problem ?
A: We are aware of an incompatibility problem with a small percentage of drives. The LED stays red even if the install is good, and using another chip doesn't solve the problem. The current work-around to solve the problem is to connect a 47uF capacitor between GND and K point. Our technical team is working on another solution. We apologize for the inconvenience, we'll post more info when available. Thanks to Moda, jmlacroix, Frenik and Evasion for the current fix.

i connected the capacitor to the GND and K Point and voila! Backups are running and perfect.

So in review of this chip. It plays games flawlessly. With the promises of the wasabi team to have upgrades via DVD (which i think is pointless now since Big N's star games are out for the Wii already). This chip has only 9 wires to install for D2C and 5 wires for D2B and under.

Re: Wasabi Mod Chip Review

i agree and they stated they are working on an alternate fix that wont allow it, which i dont see happening anytime soon.

Nice review. Covered pretty much all aspects.
PS: Should be moved to the reviews section
