Bet you weren’t expecting this one were you? In fact, I don’t think many people were.
However, the CEO of Big N himself (Satoru Iwata) went on stage this morning to introduce us to the 4th major revision to the Wii System Menu we all know and love. Although some features are gladly welcomed and well deserved, we can’t help but feel there is something else behind this update that Nintendo hasn’t told us. This is the known feature list so far:
* The Wii console can now use SDHC (SD High Capacity) Cards with a maximum of 32GB of storage.
* The SD Card Menu, which allows you to launch titles directly from an SD or SDHC Card, is added to the Wii menu.
* The Wii Shop Channel will now allow you to download titles directly to an SD or SDHC Card.
* The Wii console’s Data Management menu has been enhanced to make it easier to copy and move stored items on an SD Card or the Wii console’s system memory.
* The Wii User Agreement, which includes the Wii Privacy Policy, has been updated. Because the updated agreement applies to you and your use of the Wii Network Service, you should view the updated version by clicking on the Wii icon located on the lower-left portion of the Wii Channel menu, selecting Wii Settings, accessing the Internet setting, and selecting User Agreements.
* There are other behind-the-scenes enhancements to the Wii console system menu included with Wii Menu 4.0
There have also been changes to certain IOS’s, which are believed to attempt to bar out any hacking attempts. So far, we know that the Twilight Hack can NOT be copied from the SD Card, and DVDX does not work. However, if you have the Homebrew Channel and upgrade to 4.0, you will not lose it’s functionality. However, WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND NOT UPDATING YOUR WII FOR THE TIME BEING!!!
In a double whammy, HackMii developer wraggster has posted a quick rundown/review of 4.0 from a technical standpoint:
Nintendo, as expected, half-assed the SD feature by just automating the copy to NAND. No surprise there.
The IOS16 that warez users used to pirate is no longer an option, thank goodness.
HBC survives. So does DVDX.
They fixed the bug that the HBC installer and DVDX 3.4 installer use; time to bring out another one.
Twilight Hack no longer works. I’d like to remind everyone that this exploit has been in use for over a year. Whether it comes back or a new game exploit takes its place, I think we can say it’s served us all well.
No new problems expected with BootMii, other than needing a new exploit as mentioned above.
We will keep you up to date as we hear more information.

Looks like Nintendo may be getting serious...

Bye bye Twilight Hack, well maybe.

Those features sound nice but still not worth updating.

even with the Waninkoko Firmware Updater 4.0, would it be worth updating to 4.0?

just dont update to 4.0, if you really want those features just Waninkoko's FW Updater just know that it does have a draw back.

I'm sticking with 3.2 at the moment.

yeah I'm staying at 3.2U till another update or hack that makes the Wii worth updating that is better than 3.2U

Ok, stupid question from a gal who doesn't use her Wii, what do you really lose besides the twilight hack? I have the wad installer, and should really get around to the homebrew channel some day (hacking the Wii is more confusing to me than my other systems fer some reason, probably lack of research), but would the loss of the twilight hack really be that bad? I did a search, someone said you couldn't install new wads, is this true? This means that if you load 4.0, your homebrew is frozen until a new workaround is found, right? I mean, you can still use it, but you can't install more.
