If you haven’t yet drawn the conclusion, one coder by the name of Tantric maintains three different Nintendo Emulators: SNES9X, FCEU, and Visual Boy Advance. As all three emulators share similar code, all three usually recieve updates and improvements at the same time. As is the case, we will bring you three updates in one post!

Our beloved SNES Emulator is the first to recieve it’s upgrade. v009 is mainly a stability release, but nevertheless:

009

  • Faster SD/USB – new read-ahead cache
  • Removed trigger of back to menu for Classic Controller right joystick
  • Fixed a bug with reading files < 2048 bytes
  • Fixed some memory leaks, buffer overflows, etc
  • Code cleanup, other general bugfixes

Download

Second in our lineup is the ever popular Gameboy Colour/Gameboy Advance emulator. Although VBA recieved many of the same upgrades that SNES9X recieved, v1.0.7 now bases it’s engine on the new VBA-M r847 build for GBA emulators

1.0.7

  • Updated to VBA-M r847
  • Corrected sound interpolation
  • Faster SD/USB – new read-ahead cache
  • Removed trigger of back to menu for Classic Controller right joystick
  • Fixed a bug with reading files < 2048 bytes
  • Fixed GBA games on GameCube
  • Fixed homebrew GBA games on GameCube
  • Fixed some memory leaks, buffer overflows, etc
  • Code cleanup, other general bugfixes

Download

Last but not least, we have a similar stability upgrade in v2.0.9 of Tantric’s FCE Ultra GX. Our NES emulator should now run more efficiently thanks to a memory leak, which has been fixed:

2.0.9

  • Fixed a major memory corruption bug in FCE Ultra 0.98.12
  • Faster SD/USB – new read-ahead cache
  • Removed trigger of back to menu for Classic Controller right joystick
  • Changed GameCube controller back to menu from A+Start to A+B+Z+Start
  • Add option for horizontal-only video cropping
  • Decreased minimum game size to 8 KB
  • Fixed a bug with reading files < 2048 bytes
  • Fixed some memory leaks, buffer overflows, etc
  • Code cleanup, other general bugfixes

ClIRC v0.05 FINAL

January 28th, 2009

Posted by nedthehead

We all have our reasons for using Internet Relay Chat, or IRC, whether it is to talk with other developers, using a channel for live conferencing, or to communicate as a global community. Cluster has brought all of that functionality and more into his IRC client for the DS. Anyone using a previous version of this application should (and will likely) update, as v0.05  is said to have fixed many bugs, stability issues, and contain a boatload of new features:

Version 0.05

Keyboard is faster now.
Nick autocomplete on “tab”.
Scrolling acceleration (hold up or down).
Special mode for left handed people.
Distance from keyboard to /me, /join, /nick and /msg buttons increased.
Input history (press X+Up and X+Down to browse it).
/clear command.
Host on join.
Top screen scrolling using stylus.
/ignore command :)
%ME% variable
Custom timestamp.
Compiled with new libdswifi and libfat.
New default settings.
Many bugfixes.

Splatter Castle for Wii

January 28th, 2009

Posted by nedthehead

Platform games may be the one genre that withstands the tests of time. Who doesn’t remember playing a Mario game, or even some of the early Castlevania games? Spider Dave brings us a completely new Homebrew Platform game: Splatter Castle! The game is still under heavy development, but here is a (long) list with regards to the game and it’s future:

Status

  • No sound yet
  • No game save function
  • Kind of short, and lacking in enemy types.
  • Enemy collisions are a little awkward.

Added in v.20090127

  • Backdash (press B)
  • Increased the size of the player and some monsters (*1.25) This will allow more detail at some point.
  • Fixed a block collision bug
  • Weapon hits (a little) more precisely
  • Fixed a bug preventing ‘game over’ when you die
  • Greatly reduced HP
  • Enemy: Leap Spiders
  • Boss: The Tyrant
  • Crouching attack
  • Removed a bunch of redundant stuff; this version is smaller (oops)

Ideas / Stuff I may or may not add

(If you have some ideas, feel free to put them on the talk page.)

  • More blood and gore
  • A variety of weapons for both the player and monsters
  • Item shop – buy weapons, skills
  • Save point (or room or item, etc)
  • Traps
  • Stairs, ropes, etc
  • “Rounds” for replay value. Changes based on number of times game is completed.

WiiLander

January 28th, 2009

Posted by nedthehead

We have some more retro action to knock your tube socks off! Atari gave us the original Lunar Lander game in 1979, and coder manny has brought it back on the Wii! Make sure to land your craft only on the proper bases before you run out of fuel. As a bonus, manny has also coded accelerometer support into what he calls “the first playable version” of the game.

v0.42

  • Cinematic improved dramatically.
  • Now game is easier.
  • Stall altitude refered to the “sea level”.
  • When ship stall, Wiimote start to vibrate.
  • Increase the thick of the mountains.
  • New colours, on the ship and on fire
  • Ship now take off.
  • Game over only when you run out of fuel AND ship crash.

WiiEarth

January 26th, 2009

Posted by nedthehead

Why rely on a map to help with your geography when you can use Google Earth? On that note, why use a PC to check Google Earth when you have a perfectly good Wii sitting right beside you? Yes, this is exactly what you’re thinking of. Developers Paul and Wagener have managed to create a program which allows you to view Google Earth on your Wii. Don’t believe how awesome it is? We have a video proving how well it works:

Version 2

Changes:

  • Removed Google images (captcha problem)
  • Added OpenStreetMap images
  • Way faster downloading of tiles
  • disappearing cursor problem fixed (since latest libogc was used)
  • Cool new icon (thanks Wilsoff)
  • Other cool stuff

Now, if we could get a GPS Tracking feature on the Wii, and live traffic updates…

Frodo v6

January 26th, 2009

Posted by nedthehead

Don’t be fooled by the spiffy new icon, Simon Kagstrom’s port of Christian Bauer’s Commodre 64 Emulator is now running better than ever! Since our last update, Simon has been working to make the application faster, and more user-friendly, as can be seen in the changelog for his 6th revision:

v6

  • A virtual keyboard has been implemented, both for selecting key bindings and for typing things on screen
  • Don’t load files which are zero-sized. This helps with some disk files where the first file is not the PRG one
  • Some small bug fixes and pretty large code cleanup

LoadMii

January 23rd, 2009

Posted by nedthehead

Have you ever wanted to run Homebrew without a trace? What about if you’re going to a friends house, and want to bring a USB Key with all of your Homebrew? The lemon man has created LoadMii as a completely seperate Homebrew loading app. This application can load your Homebrew executable files from any location, although WiFi is still on the wish-list (for now). As of now, the application is really small and simple, but more is planned for this new loader!!

MyLittleBall v0.0.1

January 23rd, 2009

Posted by nedthehead

It’s amazing to see how many games that everyone knows which are too simple to become fully developed console games. The most common might be Tetris (which has seen some console actions) but I’m sure some of you have bee playing this game for ages! pinecone’s MyLittle Ball puts you as an Exclamation Mark, and forces you to navigate through walls which are constantly trying to stop you. If the explanation is confusing, here is a picture to help explain better:

Also, as this is the first revision of the game, pinecone has released a “To-Do” list:

Looking to the Future

Hoping to add sound and high score system sometime soon (if someone else wants to help).

Can’t say enough about it. For a fairly simple game, it’s another one that you’ll find yourself addicted to.
