I think it is safe to say I wasn’t the only person disappointed when I heard that Nintendo would not allow people to download the WiiSpeak channel if they bought their WiiSpeak microphone used (see our previous article here). After lobby groups failed, and countless e-Mails to Nintendo went unheard, Nintendo decided to release a statement to all of us gamers in waiting for some good news.

Thankfully, Big N delivered:

“Any consumer who requires a Wii Download Ticket after purchasing a pre-owned Wii Speak Accessory may contact their local Nintendo Customer Services department, where they can request a Wii Download Ticket for the Wii Speak Channel for free.”

Smart move on Nintendo’s part. You can now rest assured that you will be able to download the WiiSpeak channel if you buy your microphone used. Now can we get in game chat on all online games?

Nitro Hax: DS Cheat Tool

November 28th, 2008

Posted by nedthehead

I thought the words “cheating” and “official” weren’t supposed to be used in the same sentence? Don’t tell that to the DrunkenCoders team, with their updated version of Nitro Hax. Simply put, Nitro Hax is a cheating tool for official games running on your DS. Nitro Hax uses Action Replay codes, and (with the right knowledge and a good guide) allows you to create your own cheat codes!

How to use it:
1) Patch NitroHax.nds with a DLDI file if you need to.
2) Copy the NitroHax.nds file to your media device.
3) Place an Action Replay XML file on your media device.
4) Start NitroHax.nds from your media device
4a) One of the following will be loaded automatically if it is found (in order of preference):
“cheats.xml” in the current directory
“/NitroHax/cheats.xml”
“/data/NitroHax/cheats.xml”
“/cheats.xml”
4b) If no file is found, browse for and select a file to open.
5) Remove your media device if you want to.
6) Remove any card that is in Slot-1
7) Insert the DS game into Slot-1
8: Choose the cheats you want to enable.
8a) Some cheats are enabled by default and others may be always on. This is specified in the XML file.
8b) The keys are:
A : Open a folder or toggle a cheat enabled
B : Go up a folder or exit the cheat menu if at the top level
X : Enable all cheats in current folder
Y : Disable all cheats in current folder
L : Move up half a screen
R : Move down half a screen
Up : Move up one line
Down : Move down one line
Start : Start the game
9) When you are done, exit the cheat menu.
10) The game will then start with cheats running.

Xyzzy v1.1

November 26th, 2008

Posted by nedthehead

Homebrew developers, firmware crackers, and exploit archaeologists rejoice! Bushing’s Xyzzy application to extract OTP Encryption keys on the Wii.

This program will do the following, automatically:

  • Download IOS11 from the Nintendo Update Server
  • Patch it to remove the MEM2 protection (so the PPC can access all 64MB of it)
  • Patch it to allow it to delete itself later using ES_DeleteTitle()
  • Find an unused IOS slot (counting downward from IOS255)
  • Install the hacked IOS11 there
  • Reboot into the hacked IOS
  • Copy the private key structure from the IOS address space into MEM1
  • Reboot back into a sane IOS
  • Delete the temporary, hacked IOS
  • Display the keys on screen
  • Try to write them to a file on the SD card — keys.txt
  • Pause for 60 seconds to allow you to copy the keys down using pen and paper,if necessary

I wrote this a week or two after I killed a Wii trying to reproduce tmbinc’s original Tweezer Hack. May it rest in peace.

The first version of this code just used a patched version of IOS, which was an ugly hack. It’s still an ugly hack, but at least it no longer contains copyrighted code. You should only really need to run it once on any given Wii, but it should be safe to run as much as you want. If nothing else, it demonstrates the kinds of ways you can use PatchMii_core to do something useful (as opposed to just running it and then packaging the result up as cIOS).

WiiRd v0.9.2

November 26th, 2008

Posted by nedthehead

If you use a USB Gecko, or Gecko OS, WiiRd is one of your first stops in the “cheating” aspect of gaming. Although we have the same looking program, the code has underwent an intense transformation from the previous version:

It has been a long time…

anyway.. now the console client is at 0.9.2 . And it brings some new things:

  • 2 new commands: multipeek and watchlist (preparation for a planned GUI feature which however aren’t completely decided yet)
  • debug levels: allows accessing addresses without exceptions (on your own risk!) (adebug command)
  • MAJOR BUG FIX: many users complained why the GUI sometmes stopped working.. looking at the console it shows some random command like “gamestatus” or “version”. This was a threading issue in the console which is fixed now – even the GUI should therefore operate much more stable.
  • documentation on both new commands and adebug updated

Additionally the sources have been uploaded again and these are again compilable under Linux (both big and little endian).

The GUI has not changed, the interface has not changed, nothing on Wii side has changed, it’s only a roundup of the console – and well also the base for some new GUI features – normally I wouldn’t release such a version now but as it fixes a major major bug of the old version, I decided to do anyway!

On that subject, we also got a progress update on Gecko OS 2.0!

While i’m posting a couple of points i want to make which i’ve been asked, is will ocarina cheats work on Gecko 2.0?. Yes they will of course. Also WiiRD will be compatible with Gecko 2.0 as well as the Gecko 2.0 client, it is just more options for users.

GuitarFun 3.5

November 25th, 2008

Posted by nedthehead

With all of the new timing based games coming out, it was only a matter of time before we found a good Homebrew version! And one that plays Skid Row too? Even better!

For those who have been following GuitarFun, the clone of Guitar Hero/RockBand is a very similar game, with a very similar feel. Heck, you can even use your Guitar Hero/ RockBand controller if you want!

  • use of USB devices or SD in the Wii version
  • with separate lists
  • reading accelerated through a dedicated thread (the songs begin in just a second thanks to this technique)
  • incorporation of all changes
  • ASNDLIB New in bookstores
  • and more

WordDS v0.2

November 25th, 2008

Posted by nedthehead

Notepad is something every Windows user should utilize. Such a great application for taking down quick notes, and jotting down ideas. It was only a matter of time before it came to the DS, or at least, something which works the same way.

WordDS does what it advertises: It lets you write documents and saves them in .html format.

v0.1 – First Release

* text editing:

- typeface (Arial, Times New Roman, Chinyen, Courier New, Flubber, Viner Hand ITC)
- fontsize (from 1 until 7)
- fontcolor (black, grey, orange, blue, red, pink, purple, green)
- text alignment (left, right, center, justify)
- way of writing (bold, italic, underlined, normal)
- Attention! The text editing won´t be visible on the Nintendo DS, only on the computer!!!

* the keyboard contains the alphabet and all additional character
* the maximum text size amounts 623 characters per document
* the maximum filename length amounts 16 characters (without file extension)

v0.2

* some bugfixes
* 5 new typefaces (Calligraph421 BT, Digifit, Asimov, Candles, Gazzerelli, Fingerpop)
* 216 fontcolors are selectable
* added 216 selectable pagecolors
* added a character counter
* added a word counter

- Attention! The word counter doesn´t count the real number of words, it assumes that a averagely word is about 6 character long!!!

known bugs:

* the opening of files doesn´t work yet
* the editing of more text parts doesn´t work
* the text size is too small

planned things for version 0.3:

* to enable the opening of files which are created by WordDS
