A DS Emulator for the Wii?

April 2nd, 2009

Posted by nedthehead

We all know the DS is the best handheld you can buy, and the greatest next-gen console would have to be the Wii. The only thing better than a Wii and a DS is a Wii and a DS!

Did I lose you?

It *seems* true. If linkinworm1′s video proves true, we could have a working DS Emulator on our hands to run all of our DS games. Think about this logically, the WiiMote would function decently well as a stylus! We do have the issue of lack of buttons and only one TV Screen, but for an early build, it looks promising!

Definitely not the best quality from a “rumour” video, but we can hope for the best! No release date has been set, so we’ll call this a rumour for now, and update you if we hear anything else!

UPDATE: Seems as if the same people who leaked Waninkoko’s last project have managed to leak this one too. No names, and please do not disrespect that particular community, but after the last fiasco, I find it really disrespectful. So out of respect, please DO NOT POST LINKS TO THE LOADER!! Waninkoko has yet to respond on the issue.

(Thanks to NES-Hacks former admin KinG-Td for the tip)

Well, you can’t.

Not yet at least. Waninkoko has been making a lot of news this week, along with most of the Wii community. However, this has nothing to do with System menu 4.0. Instead, this is a completely new hack meant to revolutionize the current methods of backup loading!

Waninkoko’s premise is simple: instead of using the DVD Drive to run games, why not load all games to a USB Device, which you can attach to your Wii?

By this time, you are saying, “Prove it! Show me the Source!”. So what better way to demonstrate the application than the video straight from the horses mouth?

Not only that, but if you watch the video, near the end, it appears that Waninkoko rips a DVD straight to the USB device.

Now, the only information we have on this video (thus, itself being our Source) is contained within the video, so we have no idea of a timeframe for release. However, rest assured we will definitely keep you updated!

According to some rumours, the boys at Big N have taken a page out of Microsoft’s books.

The story goes something like this: some people were playing Mario Kart online and having fun, when all of a sudden, they were kicked out, and they received a message from Nintendo saying that they were banned from Nintendo’s Wi-Fi Connection because they were found to have the Homebrew Channel installed on their Wii.

If this sounds a bit fishy to you, you are thinking on the same path as HackMii developer Marcan, who had this to say:

There is very little information regarding the claimed issue. However, considering HBC is not a prerequisite for Mario Kart online cheating, nor does it have any direct relationship with it, and especially considering the ease with which we could change HBC’s Title ID, I think it’d be incredibly foolish for Nintendo to do this. They aren’t the brightest of the lot, but they’re not that stupid.

I have succeeded in playing a perfectly normal WFC match on-line with Mario Kart while HBC (1.0.1) was installed. There was no sign of trouble or errors at all.

Unless we get multiple, verifiable reports of people who have never cheated at Mario Kart or performed any modifications whatsoever, and who do not have and have never had any other installable homebrew other than HBC and no other modifications (that means no region changes, no downgrades, no IOS16, no cIOS, no warez launchers, and no other unofficial channels), no modchip, and a legit, in-region copy of Mario Kart, I am forced to conclude that whoever made this claim hasn’t done their research properly.

This sounds reasonable. The fact of the matter is that the reported cases have not been confirmed by anyone, and could be seen as completely false. However, take this message as a “heads-up” in that Nintendo may have something else in store for the Homebrew Community.

For many people who use Teknecal’s Homebrew Broswer, it’s hard to see where you can improve the application. It is one of the most complete and easy ways to download Homebrew straight onto your Wii. Teknecal hasn’t released an update in a while because he has spent a lot of time into making v0.3 an eye-popping release. Now, prepare your eyes to be popped:

Homebrew Browser v0.3 is new the version HBB which is being developed. This is a preview video of how HBB v0.3 looks and what it offers. HBB now has background music, threading, better sorting, a scrollable list of applications, text printed at run time which means no more large images, etc.

As of yet, no release date has been announced, but after a preview video such as this, you should be expecting an update sometime in the near future.

One of the most popular applications to hit the Wii Homebrew scene, many people use and rely on Gecko OS every time they run their Wii. The application helps in many ways with Backup loading, Ocarina, and some other common system tasks. Wouldn’t you be suprised to hear we have a new version almost at our hands? [nuke] posted a rather unexpected message to his blog detailing his next revision of his popular application, plus a money shot:

Sorry for the delay in Gecko 2.0 software, i know was supposed to be released on the 1st but i decided not to rush it, fix all the bugs and figure out the best way to complete the cheat options so users no longer have to use single text files.

anyway here a screen grab i took, so you can see whats coming, some new features and tools, and big improvements on old ones.

File menu is still not finished, which is basically, DOL, ELF, MP3 loader, which is alot like SD load but supports more file types.

Thanks again for the support!

Many people were ecstatic to here of the release of Waninkoko’s Backup Launcher. His partner in crime, WiiGator, has taken a step forward, and is developing a Backup Launcher that supports GameCube backups. Here is a preview video of it in action:

Obviously, with a pending release like this, WiiGator was kind enough to clear up some information about the final product:

The last days I was working on a loader for GC backups. This is only a preview. The release will be within the next week.

A tester made a video showing it in action. Sorry for the bad quality.

http://de.youtube.com/watch?v=YhheQgAoZbo

Here are some notes:

I tested it with the games I have. All games seem to be fully working. There may be games which are not working.

IOS249 with backup support need to be installed (e.g. my cIOS r7 from backuplauncher 0.3 gamma).

DVD speed is still limited to 3x.

There are sometimes problems with the DVD read speed. So there is sometimes a very short delay in a few games. The game play is only barely influenced. This was only the case for one of my games.

If you eject the disc, no disc can be detected after it. For 2 disc games use the second disc to boot, if you need to change the disc.

You will need to copy MIOS files to a SD card if you don’t have a internet connection (either Version 5 or Version 6, both is working). There are problems with the Nintendo servers in the last time. You may not be able to download it.

We’ve been covering a lot of news surrounding the DSi in the past few months, but it doesn’t take a sharp mind to notice that (virtually) no one in North America or Europe has their hands on a DSi. If you’re jumping at the bit to pick up the next generation DS, Nintendo does not plan to keep you waiting for too long!

Multiple sources close to Nintendo tell IGN that the company is gearing up to debut the anticipated successor to its DS Lite handheld during the first half of this year in America. More specifically, the company has allegedly relayed to its partners that DSi will ship stateside in early April, most likely on April 4. Insiders assert that they have been told the system will retail for $179.99 when it launches domestically.

Yes, we all knew the price jump was coming, but when you look at the other end of the spectrum, April 4 is just over 3 months away! With any luck, Nintendo will pull through and you will have your hands on a shiny new toy by summer!

We posted a while back about the new Wii DVD drive that had been discovered to prevent the use of all modchips (article here). That being the case, it may come as a suprise to hear that the D2Pro team (known for the D2 series of Wii Modchips) has managed to break the code for the drive, and apparently, has backups running off of the Wii!

Since the appearance of the so-called ‘d2nothing’ drives in the market
over the last month-or-so, a number of concerned installers have emailed us
to ask about a modding solution for when this drive becomes commonplace. At
this point, we would simply like to confirm that the d2pro team are working
on such a solution, and that we have backups running on the d2nothing
drive
. More details will be made available soon.

Sounds like the team is trying to keep a low profile on this new “solution”. We will update you if we hear anything else from the team.

Not neccessarily a hack, but something very cool that I’m sure more than a few users will appreciate. Nintendo has apparently teamed up with the advertising company Dentsu Inc to launch a service where users can stream and watch videos directly from their Wii. The service is set to launch in Japan in early 2009. It is expected the service will become available in other parts of the world, but no timeframe has been given for any other releases.

The latest service to be announced, though, will have two distinct advantages:

  1. Original content, and
  2. Nintendo.

The new video service, created in conjunction with ad agency Dentsu, will launch early next year in Japan, with cartoons and other original programming. Some downloads will require payment, while others will be free, though supported by advertising.

Can’t be too bad, can it? Hopefully the service will do well enough in Japan to pressure Nintendo into bringing the application to the rest of the world!

If you’re still holding on to pick up a DSi before the holidays hit, you may have to wait a little longer. We already knew that Nintendo was not going to launch the DSi in North America before Christmas, but it looks like we will get a feel for the new handheld earlier than we expected!

The biggest is obviously the launch of the Nintendo DSi platform. The system is already available in Japan, but Nintendo of America has openly revealed that the company isn’t interested in pushing the new system in the US prior to Christmas. Instead, it will wait until at least March of 2009 before giving the system the US push it deserves.

If you are excited about that, I think Nintendo really deserves praise for this next decision even more:

But even though the big story is the DSi, Nintendo is not going to just up and abandon the Nintendo DS Lite platform. After all, 2008 promises to be the system’s biggest year, and there will be plenty of new owners after Christmas looking for some great products to experience. We already know that Nintendo’s got the next Fire Emblem hitting the DS early next year, and Rhythm Heaven – one of the coolest music games to hit Japan this year – will be coming by Spring as well. The next Mario & Luigi RPG is also heading to the DS next year.

Looks like 2009 will be a big year for Nintendo’s most successful handheld!
