Reports are flying in this morning that the new DSi handheld is incapable of booting existing flash carts. Our friend ahtin at Hacken.cc who has got his hands on a brand new DSi, has tested both the popular R4 DS and EZ Flash V.

ahtin has reported that the R4 DS (an auto-booting slot-1 cart), when inserted into the DSi, in fact does NOT automatically boot up, and fails to appear at all in the new revamped DSi main menu (which is normal behaviour for an auto-booting cart). The EZ Flash V on the other hand (a non auto-booting slot-1 cart), does in fact show in the DSi’s main menu, but when launched generates an error which prevents it from loading any further.

Whether or not the new flash cart “prevention” on the DSi can be disabled or worked around is yet to be determined. Once more people get their hands on the new Nintendo handheld revision, we’ll undoubtedly learn more about why this is happening. Perhaps it could be something as simple as an update in the carts loader/firmware (at least in the case of the EZ-V), or perhaps something a modified firmware (ala. FlashMe) could fix. But of course, only time will tell.

Hacken.cc have not reported results on any other flash kits. Stay tuned to GBAtemp for any further news, as we’ll keep you posted on any developments.

UPDATE!: ahtin has informed me personally of his latest tests. Unfortunately it’s not good news! Just take a look at the long list of flash carts that have ALSO FAILED on the DSi…

RTS function

The Real Time Save features of M3R:
====================================
1) Support maximum of 3 save files for each game.
2) Fast loading time & saving time. (save time=8sec/load time=5sec, The fastest performance in the market.)

4) Integrated RTS menu support showing time, loading & saving status, monitoring capacity of SD etc…
5) Support more than 1 set of hot-keys for activating RTS menu to prevent key-conflict situation occurs. (L+R+sel or L+R+Y)

To enable RTS feature:

Just make sure the “RT Save(L+R+SL)” or “RT Save(L+R+Y)” option at “RTS/soft reset” pull-down menu of the game configuration menu has been selected. (There is only 1 save file for a game by default. If users want to have more than one save file for the game, please press “select” when highlighting the game at the game list menu and Select the “create is1″ or “create is2″ option. In addition, if the capacity of the TF card is not enough for creating file, users may also delete selected files in the “My Card” menu.)

Basic operation:

Just press “L+R+SL” or “L+R+Y” to activate RTS menu during game play.

Useful information:
Due to the restrictions of the system of nds, it’s not easy to make it perfect. However, the load/save function is stable and we tested over 3000 of games, about 95% of games are able to use RTS function and all the status of those games can be restored and let me continue to play the game without so many problems so the overall performance of the RTS function is satisfied. To help users to use the RTC function smoothly, users may need to note the followings:

1. Please do not activate the RTS menu at the beginning of game boot up such as logo graphic is loading or showing. It’s because the initial process of the game is usually still progress.
2. Please do not activate the RTS menu during which the data is being loaded or saved.
3. The graphic of a few games may not be able to restore perfectly upon loading back the save file data into memory; we suggest users may re-try to restore the game (load) at another moment. Usually, if users save the game at gameplay, please try loading back during gameplay and not from the main menu. Another example, if users save the game at the 3D state, we suggest loading the data back at the 3D state too.
4. The sound of a few games may temporary break upon loading back the save file data, we suggest closing the cover of the NDS for a second then re-opening it again. Usually, it will be able to recover without any problem in most cases.

This update removed stages but added more characters. Therefore, one stage and nine characters

I know everyone has been waiting for a 5th Demo and I’ll give it to you. There is currently only 1 stage but 9 characters. We’re having problems with the KT_lib/EFS system so more stages could take a week. Keep in mind this is only the Beta Version so a fixed version will come soon. Please no posts on the forum like This demo sucks there’s only 1 stage and no music! because we know and we’re working on it. But I hope you guys enjoy the demo. If you see Fuzzy on the forum thank him for the help with the KT_Lib.

Nintendo recently revealed that Wii Points would be called Nintendo Points. It has since been confirmed that when you buy Nintendo Points, they can only be linked to one system (either the DSi or the Wii). So basically you can not use the same Nintendo Points card to download both Wii Ware and DS Ware

Mario Paint Composer

Anyone who has played Mario Paint for SNES has had some fun with the music composition tool, and many people have even produced professional songs on it… well, maybe reproduced them, but nevertheless, it was an awesome way to get some cool sounds and write some tracks.

Jump forward in the future now and we have Mario Paint Composer for the DS. It works in exactly the same way as the original does:

Mario Paint Composer DS is an adaptation of the music composer tool found in the Super Nintendo game “Mario Paint” with a few new adaptations which I added in from the PC version created by unFun Games (http://www.unfungames.com/). Please note, I am not responsible for the pc version, these two programs merely share the same name and that is all. This is not a direct port of any version, it is completely coded by myself.

Features: These are new features continueing from the ones already in the snes version

-Saving and Loading of songs
-Sharp and Flat notes
-more lower ranged notes
-4 new note types
-4 notes per can be played at once rather then the 3 limit
-Longer songs

Does anyone else actually believe that this guy developed a WHOLE game by himself? Originally, he decided to make this game for the GBA, but since the DS came out, he took advantage of the touch screen feature. The game looks better than 80% of the crap we get on the Wii. Gaming companies need to hire this guy.. 5 yrs and over 15,000 hours..

My name is Bob, age 25.

This is my game for Nintendo DS, a 20-hour-long retail-size,
retail-quality adventure title by a single human being-
The largest console game ever made by one person.

“bob’s game” is a simple 2D adventure game, with focus on
story, puzzles, item collection, and communication instead
of repetitive battles with palette-swapped enemies.

Many characters (over 200 completely unique characters!)
have deep personalities that evolve, and many things
depend on the in-game time, day and weather.

It’s the game I wanted to play when I was younger,
a vision I’ve been following since then.

The game industry is evolving rapidly into a new era where
titles are made by teams of more than a hundred developers.

I saw a window of opportunity quickly closing- what may be the
last chance for making a console game to be possible by a single individual.

Even on a portable platform, singlehandedly creating something
generally made by large, well-funded teams was no small effort.

All concepts, story, code, sprites, tiles, music, samples,
fonts, etc. were created entirely from scratch by me-
and I had to teach myself the skills as I went along.

The code is straight C, the music is tracked, and the art is all
completely hand-clicked tiles and sprites- done the right way,
pixel by pixel, like the classics we all know and love.

“bob’s game” is a sort of masterpiece for me.
I’ve invested well over 15,000 hours into
its development over 5 years of dedication-
That is no exaggeration, and it shows.

I hope this to become one of the last great old-school
